New Orleans teen sets home on fire while playing with a lighter

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WWL-TV) -

A 13-year-old who said he was playing with a lighter, started a fire that destroyed his home Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred around 4:30 in the 3700 block of North Robertson.

A fire department spokesman said the child called 911 and told dispatchers that his home was on fire. Five minutes later the first units arrived on the scene and were able to rescue the child who was trapped inside of the home by smoke, flames and burglar bars, which were on all of the windows and doors.

The spokesman said as one unit battled an intense fire at the front of the home, a second unit received another call from the child, who said he was inside of the kitchen. Firefighters were able to remove the bars over the kitchen door to the outside and free the child.

The side of the double where the fire occurred was totally destroyed, while the other side sustained water and smoke damage.
