BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Local physicians helped hundreds of South Mississippi high school students wanting to throw, kick or dribble a ball get the medical all clear to play.
Bienville Orthopaedic Specialists and Encore Rehabilitation gave free sports physicals to 1,400 students on Saturday for the 2014 - 2015 school year. The students attend 14 high schools in Harrison and Jackson counties. Officials said the physicals are required for all student athletes.
Students were screened for many possible health issues including blood pressure, heart, and lung. Doctors also asked students about their medical history and tried to determine if the young people had any previous undetected muscle or bone injuries.
"A lot of these kids may not see a doctor all year and this maybe their only chance for a doctor to look them over because they play sports," said Eric Oehms, Sports Medicine Coordinator.
The staff was able to complete the 1,400 exams between 7:30 a.m. and noon.
