Soldier surprises his six year old daughter at school

FLORENCE, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Emotions ran high Friday at Steen's Creek Elementary School in Florence during an awards ceremony. A kindergarten student received a special award from a very special guest and she was not the only one surprised by this familiar face.

Six year old Nyla Myers was so excited to see her family sitting in the back of the classroom right before she was about to be awarded student of the month. Everyone sat patiently waiting, except her father. Master Sergeant Kevin Myers has been deployed overseas since January.

Steen's Creek Elementary School teacher said, "So, we want to give you something for being student of the month. We have a certificate and trophy and we have somebody that we want to give it to you, okay?

Master Sgt.Kevin Myers said, "She didn't know I was coming home. I actually came home a little early and it gave me the opportunity to give her a big surprise," said Master Sgt. Kevin Myers. "So, today was the day daddy came home. I thought about this the last day and a half of how it would feel to re-unite with my family and be with them again. A lot of emotions run through your mind and your body and you try to hold it together."

Nyla said she couldn't believe her father was actually home.

"It means so much," said Nyla. "I love my daddy, because I really wanted him to come back home."

Not only was Nyla surprised, Master Sergeant Kevin Myers who served in Afghanistan for six months with the MS Air National Guard also surprised his mother and grandmother.

"Words can't express what I was feeling. I was just so rejoiced to see him," said Myers' grandmother.

"I know how much his kids mean to him and this was the best thing I could have done for him because this meant the world to him and our kids," said Charisse Myers.

Kevin's wife and father found out several days ago he would be coming home, and decided to surprise the entire family.
