Bill to ban social media use in car moves forward

People who use mobile devices while they drive may soon need to be aware of a bill that took another big step closer to becoming Louisiana law on Thursday.

The bill would ban using any mobile device to access social media sites while operating a vehicle and it passed unanimously through the house floor by a vote of 94-0.

The bill was introduced by Senator Dale Erdey of Livingston and targets those drivers who check websites like Twitter, Facebook or Instagram while driving. Erdey says it closes a loophole that exists in the state's current ban on texting and driving and his fellow lawmakers agreed.

"I think the message here is that we want to make sure that the drivers know we put teeth in the law and texting is not good while you're driving and being on a social media site is not good either so it really accomplishes both in trying to make our roads safer," said Erdey.

A short amendment to the bill was added, excluding HAM radios and CBs from the list of devices. The bill now heads back to the Senate for concurrence.
