JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - Meet Floyd Lampart from New York, pedaling his way along Highway 90. He has two great loves in his life.
"I've ridden bicycles for 30 years and I want to combine that with my true passion of taking care of animals and seeing that animals are taken care of," Lampart said.
To do that, he's trying to raise $100,000 for the Best Friends Animal Society of Utah, a no kill shelter that takes in thousands of animals every year. He said taking care of that many animals costs a lot of money.
"They're building a new hospital out there and they are in need of funds, so I figured I'd combine my two likes and passions and do this bike ride and benefit them."
So how to you pile up 12,000 miles on a bike? He started in Lake Placid, New York. He went down to Key West, Florida, through Mississippi Thursday on his way to San Diego, California, then up to Washington state and back home again.
The support he's received has been heartwarming.
"Most of the people that I come in contact with are very positive and very supportive of the bike ride," Lampart explained. "I hand out my business card to them and they seem very supportive and want to help and ask how they can help."
And even though he's 67, Lampart is certain he'll wear out plenty of bike tires before he wears out. He hopes to be back home in New York by late summer.
