JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are investigating vandalism at Beth Israel Congregation on Old Canton Road.

Police say the vandalism happened early Thursday morning, and they are investigating the incident as malicious mischief and a hate crime.

Sometime overnight several windows were broken and the word "Jew" was etched in the paint on a door to the synagogue.

Police say it looks like the windows were broken with a hammer.

"We're pretty convinced it's an isolated incident. In the Jackson community there is understanding between different religions," said Rabbi Valerie Cohen. "The members of our congregation are very integral to the greater Jackson community. We do a lot of inner faith work, and we've been here for 150 years."
