Mayfest ends on a high note

Posted: Updated:
OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -

Ryan Merrill is a painter out of Gulfport. His colorful designs are splashed onto various surfaces, giving the buyer a variety of options. Mayfest in Ocean Springs wrapped up Sunday. From his experience, he says it was an event he just couldn't miss.

"I love coming to Ocean Springs and selling art. This is a great community for the arts and the artists. Also the local people who enjoy coming out just to see the art," Merrill said.

Merrill has partnered with Sea Turtle Sports, a company out of New Orleans. They've taken his artwork and placed it on polos, hats and coasters,

"It's a really humbling experience when someone comes up and tells you they appreciate your work.Or they've bought something before and they just want to visit or buy something new," Merirll said.

"I tell you what the vibe here is so easy going and laid back. We are here just to have fun and take it all in. We're all connected to our smart phones these days. It's better to just hang out, have a beer and enjoy a beautiful day," Allen Bell with Sea Turtle Sports said.

There was plenty to enjoy. Hundreds of vendors set up shop selling everything from one of a kind artwork, to unique coastal dishes. Not to mention the fact that there was non stop music of all genres for everyone to dance to.

"It's like a gumbo almost. There's different genres and it's a great time. It really is. I think it's a good setting for any event. It's a great town with good people," local musician, Thomas Bovernkerk said.

So in the end Merrill was glad to have set up shop at the festival and he hopes to do it again. After all, he said sometimes just being there is an inspiration,

"It's wonderful to see all the different types of art. Just today [Sunday] I've seen people I've never seen at events before. It's great to mix and mingle and get inspired from everyone and hopefully inspire others."
