Panthers use home cooking to get back to winning ways

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Entering Saturday's game against Louisiana, the Albany Panthers have won 13 straight games at the Albany Civic Center.

They are also sitting on a franchise-worst three game losing streak.

Something had to give.

It was an ugly first half for Albany.

QB Cecil Lester had two passes intercepted off tipped balls, adding to several dropped passes by Panther receivers.

Yet somehow, the team only trailed by seven at half, 21-14.

On the second play from scrimmage in the second half, Tito forced and recovered a Swashbuckler fumble to set up the Panthers within the Louisiana 5.

Three plays later, Lester found John Harris for the tying TD.

The teams would trade punches throughout the 3rd quarter, with three lead changes and two ties.

In the 4th though, the Panthers took over for good.

Trailing 34-29, Albany RB Trae Ivory took the handoff, spun off a tackle, and found paydirt for the two-yard TD with

The Panthers would add a safety on the next Swashbuckler possession.

Then with 38 seconds remaining and Albany leading by 4, Lester punched it in from a yard out to ice it.

The final score was 45-42.

Panthers head coach Lucious Davis says being at home in front of 5,000-plus fans was a key factor in the win.

"It just feels good to be home," Davis said after the game. "To get home, get in front of our fans and get that support, it just feels good to be back."

What feels even better for the Panthers is ending their three-game losing streak and getting back to their winning ways.

"Anytime you win it's a good feeling. Coming off three losses,it feels even better right now," says Harris. "Now we're back to winning. We're just going to try and continue to get better and continue to win."

The win pushes the Panthers all-time record at the Civic Center to 24-2.

Albany is back on the road again next week at Lehigh Valley.
