Black Girls Run encourage better community health

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Encouraging women to pump up their workout routines from walking to running was one goal of today's "preserve the sexy tour." The event, hosted by "Blacks Girls Run!" and sponsored by Essence Magazine took place at the Jackson Medical Mall.

The one day health and fitness clinic is a nationwide tour traveling through states with the highest obesity rates.

Saturday's training program "Walk Before You Run!" helped guide women on the best workout gear, hair maintenance and eating required to get fit.

"It's important to have workshops like this because in our community you know you see the statistics you have diabetes, hypertension all of these things and obesity and its killing us, so it's our mission to get out in the community and really educate people and give them the tools they need to get started and kind of take their health back," said Ashley Hicks, co-founder of Black Girls Run.
