RAYMOND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Mississippi is already a leader in drone manufacture, with three companies making drones here and the industry is expected to take off.

Congress has ordered the Federal Aviation Administration to develop new rules and regulations to safely integrate drones into our National Aerospace System by 2015, and the Mississippi Development Authority is trying to have Mississippi become one of six sites where the new rules and regulations are developed.

"We have got an opportunity now to be on the cutting edge in a growing industry," said MDA Executive Director Brent Christensen. "Really all we have to do is marshal those resources throughout our state. And if we move ahead with this project, we think we will be successful."

Mississippi has one of the very few institutions of higher learning in the country where students are taught to fly and maintain drones. Randy Pearcy is the Chairman of the Aviation Department at Hinds Community College.

"There will definitely be a benefit for high school and colleges and all the other agencies that deal with UAV's now," said Pearcy.

Some of the civilian uses for drones include aerial photography, cropdusting, traffic control and many more.

Mississippi hopes to learn by December whether it will be one of the six sites where rules are developed for flying drones along with commercial aviation.
