JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

It takes practice handling some of the worst kinds of emergencies, and that's what a Mississippi national guard unit did Thursday morning in Jackson. It is the same unit that was called to north Mississippi recently to deal with the ricin scare.

Members of the 47th Civil Support Team, based in Flowood, were suited up with the most modern hazardous materials suits as they performed an exercise in northeast Jackson. This unit responds to help local government in identifying, chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and high yield explosives.

They are being evaluated in the exercise by trainers from Fort Sam Houston, in Texas.

Lt. Col. Michael Harlow of  Flowood, the Unit Commander.

"It's very important," said Harlow. "I mean you have seen obviously events in Boston. Civil support team was there for support, and then it is an important and very cost effective means of supporting the county EOC operators, of the state."

"We have a wide range of equipment that we are going to be using, to utilize to figure out what's behind this," said Captain Willie Hearns.

These soldiers are on call 365 days a year, 24 hours a day seven days a week.
