More Highway 80 development planned for Pearl Mayor's 2nd term

Posted: Updated:

Incumbent Pearl Mayor Brad Rogers won soundly over Keith Dennis with 83 percent of the vote in Tuesday's primary election, clinching his 2nd term in office. Rogers says he's glad the campaign is behind him, and he's ready to get to work.

The Mayor says the economic impact of Pearl's largest development project at the moment, The Outlets of Mississippi, will resonate. He expects the project to spur development farther west in the city. On Thursday, we will learn the names of a few more of the retail stores coming to the outlets.

Rogers says the project is progressing well, despite weather challenges.

"The buildings being built right now are the ones that have to be turned over first to the stores, to do their interior work themselves. The additional buildings will be built, 3-4 more buildings will be built with that same look. We're gonna have those built up, they're gonna open no later than mid-November," he says.

The Mayor also pointed out improvements along Highway 80. The old County Market grocery store has been split up into three separate retail stores in a public/private partnership.

"We're gonna get a lot of spillover development to the older sections of Highway 80, I think that in turn is gonna allow us to do cleanup, beautification along Highway 80 in the old shopping centers and shopping malls that we have," he says.
