VICKSBURG, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

State Representative George Flaggs has been declared the winner in the Vicksburg Mayor Democratic Primary. After counting the absentee and affidavit ballots, Flaggs has 2, 687 votes or 50.11%.

Flaggs beat out the more recently popular names on the campaign trail, like Linda Fondren, who admitted last month to previously being a ‘working girl' in a Nevada legal brothel, and current Mayor Paul Winfield, who was indicted in March on bribery charges.

The final order in the race is:

  • George Flaggs - 2,685   50.11%
  • Linda Fondren - 1,560   29.69%
  • Paul Winfield - 419   7.81%
  • Gertrude Anderson Young - 317   5.91%
  • David Day -  253   4.72%
  • John Ferguson - 121   2.26%

Flaggs will face Independent Darryl Hollingsworth in the June 4 General Election.

George Flaggs was all smiles Wednesday afternoon outside the Vicksburg City Hall. He greeted many of his supporters with a wave or thumbs up as they passed by.

"I haven't been able to sleep, first. But now I'll be able to rest at night because now I know that I got at least another month till campaign and not in another three weeks got to be in a runoff," said George Flaggs Wednesday.

Election day was also long one for the city's election commissioners. Their counts of the absentee, affidavit and curbside ballots determined whether or not there would be a democratic runoff.

"Careful and tedious cause we have to make sure everybody's vote counts. That's the most important thing. I don't care how they vote. If they vote by affidavits, absentees, we want to make sure that if the poll managers do what they're supposed to do then everybody's vote will count," explained Elva Smith Tolliver, one of the city election commissioners.

It was almost 4:00 Wednesday before they completed the count. But Flaggs ended with 50.11 percent of the vote. He's now looking to his fellow democrats and their supporters as he gears up for June 4.

"I don't take politics personal so I'm going to try to reach out to them and try to see whether or not we can have a consensus going forward against the independent," said Flaggs.

When asked about the controversy that surrounded some of his opponents, Flaggs said he tried to focus on running the race and not on what others had done.

"Kept on running on the fact that I had 25 years experience. I've served you with honesty and integrity. Give me opportunity. If you give me opportunity, I'll make this city the best city they've ever had," Flaggs explained.
