Large rock dropped from bridge damages Clarksville police car

CLARKSVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Clarksville police believe a really dumb prank nearly cost an officer his life when someone dropped a large rock from an interstate overpass, striking the officer's patrol car.

Just before 11:30 p.m. Friday, Officer J. Jackson was responding to a disturbance at the BP station located at Trenton and Tiny Town roads.

The officer was driving westbound along Interstate 24 toward Exit 1 when, as he traveled under the Meriwether Road Bridge, someone dropped the large rock from the west side of the bridge.

"Probably about the size of a volleyball," said Clarksville Police Sgt. Chuck Gill.

The rock struck the patrol car's roof and light bar and bounced off the vehicle to the ground. The rock damaged the car's roof, windshield and light bar.

"I think they ought to pay for the damage to the car, and not the citizens of Clarksville," Gill said.

If the cruiser had been just a few feet farther down the road, the result could have been much worse.

"The velocity of the car, and the velocity of the rock - you put those together, and if it hadn't hit on the top of the car mainly where it hit, it would have went through the windshield and been like a missile coming at him. It would have probably taken his head off," Gill said.

Officers say it could have been anyone driving under that bridge, and it could have been deadly. Investigators believe the incident was the result of two kids playing a dangerous prank.

"I don't think people realize how dangerous that is," Gill said. "It could have killed somebody, without a doubt."

Crime Stoppers is offering up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of persons involved in a crime.
