USFS: Arrest made in 10 Marshall Lake fires

CBS 5 CBS 5
FLAGSTAFF, AZ (CBS5) -

U.S. Forest Service law enforcement officers arrested a suspect in connection with 10 fires in the Marshall Lake area.

Charges are pending by the U.S. Attorney's Office, according to a news release from the Forest Service.

The arrest was the result of an extensive search and in cooperation with Forest Service law enforcement, the Coconino County Sheriff's Department, Flagstaff Police Department and Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Fires near Marshall Lake began Saturday morning and at least 10 separate fire incidents developed in the same area throughout the day and grew to about 11 acres.

Firefighters and resources contained the fires by Sunday evening.

Woody Mountain Lookout reported smoke in the Marshall Lake area at 10:28 a.m. Saturday.

An additional fire, the Deadwood Fire, was reported Saturday night in the Willard Springs area but was quickly contained before reaching an acre. The blaze did not appear to be related to the Marshall Lake fires, Forest Service personnel said.

Fire danger in Coconino National Forest remains high, and though campfires are not restricted, officials ask the public to make sure they bring at least six gallons of water or more to extinguish their campfires.

Shovels should also be used to stir the water in the campfire and ensure that the fire is out until it is cold and you can touch it, Forest Service staffers said.
