Mexican heritage celebrated in Jackson

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Mexican heritage and pride took center stage during celebrations in the streets of the Capital City Saturday.

The Cinco de Mayo Festival got underway in downtown Jackson in the morning with a 5-K run/walk and parade of horses from Capitol to Congress Streets.

All things Mexican were being offered during the one day street fest from authentic food to jewelry and crafts.

Two concert stages were set up featuring local and national artists, traditional folk dance, Mayan and Salsa dance groups.

There were also activities just for the kids at Smith Park with lots of entertainment for the whole family.

"We just didn't include mariachis, but zydeco music. We included country, rock, blues, jazz, Bobby Rush will be here later on this evening and the Mexican superstar Bobby Pulido will be here," said festival organizer Pete Castorena.

Cinco de Mayo or the Fifth of May commemorates the victory of the Mexicans over the French Army at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.
