Two Capital City entrepreneurs are being recognized for their successes in running a popular restaurant. Jeff Good and Dan Blumenthal, co-owners of Sal & Mookie's New York Pizza and Ice Cream Joint were chosen as Small Business Persons of the Year for 2013 by the Mississippi district office of the U.S. Small Business Administration.
Awards are nothing new for Good and Blumenthal, who also own and operate Bravo! Italian Restaurant and Broad Street Bakery in Jackson. Sal & Mookie's has won "Best Pizza" & "Best Ice Cream" from several state-wide and metro area publications, but both say this recognition is something to savor.
"We're blessed that we're really appreciated in our hometown," Good said. "This is a new level for us."
While they run three successful eateries, employing 205 people, this award is specifically for their management of Sal & Mookie's.
"Very happy with our business and what we've created and the partnership Jeff and I have," Blumenthal said.
Blumenthal, who is also the executive chef for all three restaurants, has been in business with Good for 19 years since they opened Bravo. Five years later they opened Broad St., and then five years ago came Sal & Mookie's.
They were nominated by Trustmark National Bank, but the accolades do not end with the state award. Blumenthal and Good will head to the nation's capital for National Small Business Week, from June 17-21.
They will compete with the other Small Business Person/s of the Year award recipients from the other 49 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and Guam for the National Small Business Person/s of the Year award.
