MADISON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler is in a fight for the office she's held for more than 30 years. Monday night she faced off with opponent Madison County Supervisor John Bell Crosby, who is in his second term on the board of supervisors.

MONA, or the Madison Organization of Neighborhood Associations, sponsored the debate at Madison Central High School. The incumbent mayor is seeking a ninth term.

MONS's board of directors compiled 11 questions from issues related to homeowners and the city.

The candidates were asked about Madison's look and design, to their thoughts on tax increment funding, charter schools and new development. Hundreds listened to their answers, questions and pleas.

"There's a lot to do. we've laid the foundation for over 30 years and there's a lot out there on the drawing board and the best is yet to come," said Hawkins Butler.

Crosby, the District One Supervisor, is trying to unseat Mayor Mary, the title on many of her campaign signs. Both are campaigning on the future of Madison.

"I want to see us bring some more business in, get our books balanced. A balance of the way the revenues come in and then that way we'll have more money to do roads and facilities for the children," said Crosby.

The Madison Organization of Neighborhood Associations represents 69 neighborhoods and over 24,000 residents. The Republican primary is May 7.
