Man Shot By Deputy Identified

The Ocean Springs man who was shot by a Jackson County Sheriff Deputy is listed in fair condition. Twenty-two-year-old John Michael Hearne was shot once in the stomach and hand Sunday morning, according to friends of the Hearne family, outside Big B's Exxon on Washington Avenue in St. Martin.

Deputies were called to the scene after store employees found a man sleeping outside the store at around four in the morning. The store manager says that when the deputies tried to wake the man he became confrontational with the officers. Soon after that, the manager says shots were fired. Hearne was then taken to Ocean Springs Hospital where he was treated for his wounds.

The incident is being investigated by the Mississippi Highway Patrol. Few details have been released at this time.

Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd said he couldn't comment on the investigation of the shooting or his department's policies regarding the use of deadly force.

Teachers and administrators at Ocean Springs High School were stunned by news of the shooting. They described Hearne as being an outstanding student and athlete who was a terrific kid.
