Weekend Whereabouts April 26-28

SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) - A variety of memorable attractions greet visitors and locals to South Mississippi this weekend.

Located in the Mississippi Sound is the 10th Annual Smokin' the Sound. Some of the fastest boats in the world will be competing in what is the kick-off to Super Boat International's racing season. The colorful boats race in eight classes with some potentially reaching speeds of nearly 200 miles per hour.

Join people of all ages at the Gulfport Lake and paddle board. It's the Dock's first ever paddle board race that includes multiple categories. For children 14 and under there is a one mile race. Then there's the recreational race and for the one's who want more of a challenge try the three mile elite and recreational race. The Dock will hold a pre-party the night before the race for participants and an after party with awards. Don't own a paddle board. No problem. Check out paddle board suppliers below.

Country singer songwriter Alexa Carter performs at the Island View Casino in Gulfport on Friday. She debuts her upcoming album "The Ballerina" in a free concert beginning at 8 p.m. Don't be surprised if she looks and sounds familiar, the Mississippi native has performed at several events along the Mississippi Gulf Coast before and has opened for big name artists like Willie Nelson and Aaron Lewis. You must 21 years or older to attend.

Over at D'Iberville High School everyone's invited to the D'Iberville Block party. And like most block parties this one's packed with fun activities like a car show, art and crafts, food, and 50/50 drawings and prizes. All proceeds benefit D'Iberville High Outside Classroom Building Project.

For more than a decade kites of all types have soared over Long Beach during the annual Long Beach kite festival. Bring your family for children's games, entertainment, food and arts and crafts vendors. Before the festival run in the Up Up and Away 5k and 1 mile fun run. The festival is Saturday in the Long Beach Harbor.

Give your little fisherman and fisherwoman a chance to prove themselves in the Coastal Conservation Association's Catch and Release Kids Fishing Rodeo. Kids between the ages of 5 to 13 will learn fishing and conservation while earning prizes. Adults must accompany children. The fishing takes place Saturday at River Park Fishing Pier in Pascagoula.
