Barry Sanders to be face of Madden NFL '14

(RNN) - The popular NFL video game franchise will have a legend grace the cover of its 25th anniversary edition.

Madden NFL '14 will feature former Detroit Lions running back and Hall of Famer Barry Sanders. Announced Wednesday night on ESPN, Sanders beat Minnesota Vikings running back and reigning NFL MVP Adrian Peterson in a 64-player bracket voted on by fans.

The bracket pitted "old school" and "new school" players against one another. 

When the game is released, Sanders will become the second consecutive Detroit Lions player to be featured on the cover. Current Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson graced the box for Madden NFL '13.

Sanders, selected in the first round of the 1989 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma State, played for 10 seasons in Detroit before suddenly retiring in 1998. He finished his professional career with 15,269 rushing yards and 99 touchdowns.

The EA Sports game, named after former NFL player, coach and commentator John Madden, is scheduled for release Aug. 27.
