PICAYUNE, MS (WLOX) -

The Picayune boy hit by an SUV last week died from the injuries he sustained in the incident, according to Picayune Police Department's Assistant Chief Jeremy Magri.

Magri said last Tuesday, 8-year-old Keanu Malik Carraway was riding his bike on Palestine Road, near Greenview Drive when he was struck.

The man accused of hitting Carraway is 52-year-old Francis Burge, of Sollie Smith Road in Carriere. Burge was driving a 2003 Chevy Tahoe.

After police searched Burge's SUV they reportedly found Oxycodone, a pain medicine considered a schedule II narcotic, Magri said.

Burge was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance, expired license and no insurance.

At this point his charges have not been upgraded.

"We are waiting on his blood test results to come from the crime lab. Those results will show whether he was under the influence of any substance that would impair his ability to operate a motor vehicle at the time of the crash," Magri said.

Police have requested a rush on the results. This investigation is ongoing.
