AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

An Auburn University tradition is changing forever.

News Leader 9 has been on the scene at Toomer's Corner since early Tuesday morning, where the two iconic trees that have long been a part of Auburn's history are being removed.

The Toomer's Corner intersection was shut down at 6:20 a.m. and the removal process began at 7 a.m. CDT.

The takedown process is expected to take a few hours at most.

Auburn University plans to keep the tradition alive and will plant two new oaks at the corner. Officials are still trying to determine what kind of oak species they want to use.

The trees will be planted after the 2013 football season, so while a cable system will be brought in over the corner for fans to roll while the corner is bare.
