VICKSBURG, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Mississippi River re-opened Monday morning in Vicksburg after barges hit the old U.S. Highway 80 railroad bridge.

Coast Guard Lt. Ryan Gomez says that there was enough water covering a barge that sank Sunday to allow other vessels to safely pass through.

After the river re-opened at 9:30 a.m. CDT, the coast guard began clearing 119 southbound vessels first and then planned to move 233 waiting northbound vessels.

The U.S. Coast Guard closed the River after a tow with about 30 barges hit the old Highway 80 bridge shortly before noon Sunday.

Officials say the railroad bridge has some scarring, but didn't sustain any significant damage when it was hit.

The bridge is used for rail traffic. It has not carried vehicle traffic since 1998.
