MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

Three Mesa hikers without cell phones or maps were rescued Monday after they got lost during their nine-mile trek, the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office said.

YCSO said they were notified Sunday just before 10 p.m. that the men had not returned from the Fossil Creek area.

Michael Bradley, 49; Justin Bradley, 29; and William Bruckner Jr., 33, began their hike at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The caller told dispatchers that Justin Bradley required insulin due to a diabetic condition and only had a one-day supply.

The search effort continued at daybreak Monday. YCSO launched their rescue helicopter in Prescott and began flyovers of the targeted areas.

The pilot spotted one of the men just after 1 p.m. standing in the Verde River and waving his arms. The pilot was able to land on the opposite side of the river and discovered that one of hikers, Justin Bradley, needed medical attention.

Michael Bradley told officers that Bruckner left the night before to return to the Child's Campground to get his vehicle.

A DPS helicopter rescue crew and units on the ground  began to search for Bruckner and located him around 4:15 p.m., about three miles south of where his hiking partners were previously located. He was airlifted to safety.

At 7:30 Wednesday morning, Ocean Springs city workers stepped up to the city hall flag pole. They hooked Mississippi's state flag underneath the American flag, and they raised both flags over the city hall grounds. And just like that, five days of debate over whether the state flag should fly in Ocean Springs temporarily came to an end.
