COPY-US tourist faces trial in Turkey

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) - An American tourist who collected stones during a beach holiday with his wife was briefly detained in Turkey and faces trial for attempting to smuggle historical artifacts.

Jason Dement told The Associated Press on Wednesday that he was taken into custody by security officials at an airport near Turkey's Mediterranean coast Sunday because 1 of his stones appeared to be an artifact. On Monday, a court released him from custody but barred him from leaving Turkey.

His lawyer said Dement, 30, from Purvis, Mississippi, faces prosecution under strict Turkish laws against the smuggling of artifacts. She said a museum report confirmed the piece to be an artifact.

Dement, a former soldier, and his wife both work as civilian employees at a U.S. Army base in Germany. She has returned there.
