PICAYUNE, MS (WLOX) - An 8-year-old boy riding his bike Wednesday afternoon is in critical condition after he was hit by an SUV, according to Picayune Police.

Picayune Police Department's Assistant Chief Jeremy Magri said the boy was only minutes away from his home when he was struck on Palestine Road, near Greenview Drive around 3:38 p.m.

The man accused of hitting the boy is 52-year-old Francis Burge, of Sollie Smith Road in Carriere. Burge was driving a Chevy Tahoe.

Magri said the victim was attempting to cross the road and may have been on his way to a nearby park.

Burge is charged with felony possession of a controlled substance, expired license and no insurance.

"Due to the extent of the boy's injuries, blood was drawn from the driver and sent off to the crime lab for analysis," Magri told WLOX News.

Burge said depending on the results of the analysis, Burge may face additional charges.

The boy was taken to the children's hospital in New Orleans.
