Police prepare for Pat's Run in wake of marathon bombing

TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -

Many people are thinking ahead to Tempe's annual Pat's Run this weekend, wondering how the tragedy in Boston will impact the race. With more than 30,000 people expected, authorities are making some changes.

"We're taking this Pat Tillman run very seriously," said Sgt. Michael Pooley with the Tempe Police Department.

While Tempe police said there haven't been any credible threats toward the event, they said spectators and participants can expect to see a lot more uniforms in the crowd.

"You're going to see officers on bicycles. You're going to see an (explosive ordinance disposal) component. You're going to see bomb dogs," Pooley said.

While police say they won't search every bag, and no one will get in trouble for bringing one, they're asking folks to leave them at home to make things easier on them.

"Thirty thousand-plus people doing a relatively short course over a relatively fine and controllable area," said venue safety expert Steve Adelman, describing the event.

We asked Adelman, who is not involved with Pat's Run, to describe the course route.

"Here we are on Curry, and not only is there a fence, but there is a fairly steep drop below it," he said, describing one leg of the race.

Adelman said you may not see trash cans along the race route, but Tempe police told us they're still working out the details.

Adelman said while police can't protect people from every imaginable threat, this race has a fairly secure course.

"From a security standpoint, this is a good course," Adelman said.

When runners get to the finish line inside the stadium, instead of hanging out and partying, some officers may be ushering people away to limit the number of people in one place at one time.
