Randolph Southern Patriots aiming for state title before school closes

SHELLMAN, GA (WALB) -

In just a few weeks, Randolph Southern School will close its doors for good.

That means there will be no more Patriot athletics.

The Patriots baseball team will only take the field a few more times, but they say they have a lot to play for.

Though there will be no next season for the Patriots, the team is playing for pride and to continue the winning tradition.

They say it's tough knowing the team and school they've invested so much in will no longer be around, but they have found a motivation.

The seniors on this team say they see no better way to close out Patriot baseball for good than with another state championship.

"We try not to talk about it much, but it'll come up every now and then," says senior OF Owen Deal on chasing a state title. "That's really what we're looking forward to doing. It's the last one and you really want to go out on a good note."

As for the underclassmen, they will be playing ball at different schools next year.

They say that only motivates them to work harder and hope to win out.

Regardless, they add it'll be very strange stepping into a different dugout next season.

"It's going to be weird not wearing red," says junior SS Trey Goree. "You don't know everybody, so its going to be a learning experience to know your teammates and learning how they are."

The Patriots have only four regular season games remaining. The first of those is Friday at home against Fullington.
