Suns heighten security at U.S. Airways

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The Valley is home to many big sporting events and they are happening right now.

The Phoenix Suns are playing downtown inside U.S. Airways on Monday night.

The Suns play the Houston Rockets in their last home game of the season.

The fans might not notice a big change in the way they do things, but the Suns organization is stepping up security.

Patrol cars circled the downtown area and security is making checks around the property to make sure there's nothing unusual, given the day's tragic bombing at the Boston Marathon.

Fans were patted down with a wand and their bags checked as usual but the Suns said there were some changes with how they secured the sports arena.

"We're also going to be working with Phoenix police tonight to make sure there is an enhanced presence around the perimeter of the building, and obviously there is no relevant threat that we've identified, just given the nature of the something like this, we want to make sure that people feel confident and comfortable that we are doing everything we can to be proactive," Suns president Jason Rowley said.

Rowley said their thoughts and prayers are with the victims in Boston.

Suns said nearly 17,000 tickets were distributed for Monday night's game, as of 5:30 p.m. with tip off at 7 p.m.
