Pittsburg community reacts to crash involving 9 ETX teenagers

PITTSBURG, TX (KLTV) -

Pittsburg Independent School District confirmed that a high school student died in a one-vehicle crash on Monday morning .

Department of Public Safety Trooper Jean Dark said a male Pittsburg High School student was driving a minivan north on FM 1520 in Camp County at around 10 o'clock Monday morning. The vehicle ran off the road; the driver over-corrected and lost control, hitting a guard rail. Two teenage girls were ejected out of the minivan's back window during the accident.

Nine students were inside the vehicle when the accident happened. One of the girls ejected from the vehicle was killed. Officials identified that student as Pittsburg High School sophomore Loida Trinidad.

"We just got an announcement from our principal saying 'Listen up, Loida Trinidad had just passed away in a car accident going to Barefoot Bay'," says Hugo Gonzalez, a senior at Pittsburg High School.

Loida and eight of her friends never made it to Barefoot Bay. They crashed into a guard rail right before they got to Lake Bob Sandlin in Pittsburg.

School officials say Trinidad's mother is an employee of the school district and works in the high school cafeteria.

Pittsburg ISD Superintendent Judy Pollan was at the scene, "We were just devastated when we arrived because it was obvious one of our students did not survive the wreck."

Gonzalez says students at Pittsburg High School were also devastated, "Everybody started crying, people were running around the hallways, crying, screaming, and then it just finally sank in and everybody busted into tears."

Gonzalez says the students were probably going fishing.

"It's just tradition stuff, seniors skip a day and go anywhere and this one just happened to go wrong."

Pollan says the school district does not know what the kids were doing but knows they never came to school.

One of the other students involved in the wreck is in critical condition in a Tyler hospital, and two are in a Pittsburg area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

"It's a feeling no one wants to feel when you know someone that you love, someone that was just there with you the night before is not there any more," Gonzalez says.

Pollan says she is still in disbelief, "We made it through prom, which always worries me, but we didn't make it through today."

Pollan says the school has counselors available to speak with students, if needed.

Trooper Dark said she does not know at this time if any of the students were wearing seatbelts.

DPS is continuing to investigate the accident. The names of the surviving students involved in the accident have not been released.
