Louisiana company expands meat recall

The Manda Packing Company has expanded its recall to include 468,000 pounds of roast beef, ham turkey breast, tasso pork, ham shanks, hog head cheese, corned beef and pastrami, due to possible Listeria monocyogene contamination.

The following products are included in the recall:

•    Leblancs Roast Beef
•    Thompsons Roast Beef

Tasso Pork

Each package has a "Sell by" date of May 13-July 2, 2013, and bears the establishment number "EST. 8746A" inside the USDA mark of inspection.

Ham Shanks
•    Manda Ham Shanks  

Each package has a "Sell by" date of May 13-June 9, 2013, and bears the establishment number "EST. 8746A" inside the USDA mark of inspection.

These products may have been sliced at retail delis, and if so, will not bear the packaging information.

The products were shipped to Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture was alerted to the problem after a sample of cooked roast beef at a store in Tennessee tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.  Further samples tested positive as well.

No reports of illnesses associated with the recalled products have been reported.

Consumption of contaminated food can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease.  Healthy people rare contract listeriosis, however it can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea.  Listeriosis can cause fatal infections in those with weakened immune systems.
