Authorities have identified the worker whose dead body was believed to be buried in a hopper at a roofing tile manufacturing plant in west Phoenix.

The Phoenix Police Department spokesman Sgt. Tommy Thompson said the victim is 30-year-old Jantu Medrano.

The Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health (AOSHA) said they were notified by Phoenix police that a man was found in the sand silo at Eagle Roofing Products. They responded and are investigating.

Police and fire spokesmen said Medrano didn't report for work Friday at 3:30 a.m. and his belongings are still at the plant.

The spokesmen said they believed his body was buried in a hopper, and that he has been stuck in the hopper since Thursday. He was supposed to be off work at 2 p.m. Thursday.

The recovery process is expected to take some time because firefighters have to dig down through five to six tons of sand. Authorities said if that's not possible they'll have to take apart the hopper.

The California-based company is located at 4602 W. Elwood St.
