If things had gone right, Jackson Police Detective Eric Smith should have been in court last week doing what he did best, keeping the worst of criminals off the street. Detective Smith should have been testifying against a murder suspect. But instead on April 4th, things went terribly wrong. Detective Eric Smith was shot and killed by a murder suspect.
By all accounts the 40 year old Smith's public service was exemplary as a Marine, then as a Jackson Police officer. No doubt he will be missed. As we reflect on this terrible loss, we are thankful for the service of Smith and so many fellow officers across Mississippi and our nation who step up daily to deal with the worst of our society.
We salute you for all the times that you stop things from going terribly wrong.
