HINDS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Jackson man was sentenced to 25 years in prison Wednesday for raping a 12-year-old relative.

Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith says John Johnson, 43, pleaded guilty to statutory rape Monday.

Johnson will not be eligible for release from prison until 2030 and will have to register as a sex offender.

"I'm pleased to see a guilty plea in this case," said Smith. "This spares the victim from testifying and frees a Hinds County courtroom for another trial."
