BUCKEYE, AZ (CBS5) -

A disturbance at the Lewis Arizona state prison complex in Buckeye ended safely Tuesday morning after guards deployed chemical agents.

About 40 inmates refused to leave the dining hall and the kitchen in the Morey Unit and began damaging property, according to Arizona Department of Corrections spokesperson Bill Lamoreaux.

Inmates initially ignored the staff's orders to stand down until personnel were forced to use the chemical agents.

Lamoreaux said the incident was then "quelled within just a few minutes."

Some of the staff and inmates suffered minor injuries.

The unit is locked down while prison staff determine the cause of the incident.
