PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A nationally acclaimed architect with deep roots in Arizona has passed away.

Paolo Soleri died Tuesday at age 93.

The urban project Soleri founded, 65 miles north of Phoenix, called Acrosanti, was described by Newsweek magazine as "...the most important urban experiment undertaken in our lifetime."

There is continuing construction at Arcosanti and Soleri's ideas can also be seen at his architectural workshop Cosanti in Paradise Valley. Cosanti is now an historic landmark. Soleri also began a now-famous urban research foundation called the Cosanti Foundation.

Soleri is survived by two daughters, Kristine Soleri Timm and Daniela Soleri, both of California, and two grandchildren.

Soleri is preceded in death by his wife of 31 years, Colly.

A public memorial service to celebrate Soleri's life will be held at Arcosanti later this year.
