Woman injured after falling under light rail car in Tempe

TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -

A 40-year-old woman was trapped under a Valley Metro Light Rail car after she fell from a platform in Tempe shortly past 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Rescue personnel had to remove part of the front car's bumper to free the woman on the tracks at the stop near 2000 E. Apache Blvd.

The woman, who was not identified, suffered arm and head injuries and taken to Scottsdale Healthcare-Osborn, said Jim Schmid of the Tempe Fire Department. She was conscious and breathing, Tempe Police spokeswoman Molly Enright said.

Traffic is flowing normally again after eastbound Apache Boulevard was closed at Martin Lane.

Westbound light rail is operating on schedule again. Eastbound light rail should be up and running shortly again. In the meantime, Valley Metro has implemented "bus bridges" to ferry passengers between the Dorsey and Sycamore light rail stations.

Schmid said the incident shook up the light rail driver.

No other information was immediately available.
