JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Mississippi State Department of health has reported the first West Nile virus death of 2013, along with two new human cases. The death was in Montgomery County and the new cases are in Forrest and Wayne counties.

Cases have been reported this year in Madison, Forrest (2), Wayne, Lowndes and Montgomery counties.

In 2012, Mississippi had 247 West Nile Virus cases and five deaths.

"It's important to remember that we are now in peak West Nile season, which includes the months of July, August and September," said MSDH State Epidemiologist Dr. Thomas Dobbs. "This is when we can expect to see the bulk of our cases throughout the state. It is important to be especially mindful of taking proper protective measures now, but West Nile virus can be contracted year-round."

Recommended protective measures include:

  • Using a mosquito repellent containing deet
  • Getting rid of standing water on property because it can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes
  • Wear protective clothing, such as long sleeves, during peak mosquito activity from dusk to dawn
  • Avoid outdoor activity during those peak times

The symptoms of West Nile Virus are generally described as mild and may include flu-like symptoms such as fever, nausea, headache and muscle weakness.  In less frequent but more severe cases, infection could leave to encephalitis and meningitis.
