Rose parade provides woman's dying wish

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Mary Beth Brutsman's one dream in life is to see the Tournament of Roses parade in Pasadena, California.

A terminal cancer diagnosis stands in her way. Brutsman was given just weeks to live after doctors told her she had stage 4 cancer. The Tournament of Roses Parade is on New Year's Day, meaning it would be unlikely Brutsman would survive to see it in person.

"I just had a crazy thought one day. Why don't we bring the rose parade to her," said daughter in law Debby Brutsman.

Working with local florists, neighbors and organizers of the parade itself, Brutsman's family set up an elaborate rose parade of their own, across the street from Brutsman's house.

"Wow, talk about a bucket list. Had the bucket list brought right to you," said Brutsman. "It is an awesome event in my life."

The President of the Tournament of Roses Parade, Scott Jenkins, sent Brutsman a personalized letter and an engraved Tiffany vase. Phoenix firefighters also came to the event to present Brutsman with flowers and provide a fire engine escort for the parade route around the neighborhood.

"Through the pain she's feeling right now, that she can see through that and just feel deeply loved," said daughter in law Debby Brutsman.

Crazy Daisy and Lux Wedding Florists helped the family put the event together by getting brides after their weddings to donate their flowers.

When the WLOX First Alert Weather Team issues an Alert Day for South Mississippi, it is because we believe the  weather will impact your day. The current Alert Day is because of the high rainfall totals we have seen with the potential for more rain. In fact, a Flash Flood Watch is in effect through Tuesday evening.
