JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - Jackson Police Chief Rebecca Coleman confirms a police officer and a murder suspect died of gunshot wounds at the Jackson Police Department headquarters in downtown Jackson Thursday afternoon.
Coleman was flanked by Assistant Police Chief Lee Vance, Hinds County Sheriff Tyrone Lewis and District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith.
Coleman said officers arrested a murder suspect Thursday afternoon, and that suspect was being interviewed on the third floor. Coleman said later there were reports of shots being fired.
The suspect and a police officer were then found dead, Coleman said.
Coleman didn't give any more details, and the identities haven't been released.
Dozens of Jackson police officers surrounded the building just before 6 p.m. People were also seen fleeing from the building. Pascagoula Street is blocked off in front of the police department.
