House considering Nissan Expansion Bill

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A bill to finance Nissan's expansion is again being considered by the House of Representatives.

Saturday the house passed Senate Bill 2920 by a three-fifths majority.

It would allow up to $100 million dollars in bonds for building expansions at the Canton facility.

Bill author, Senator Will Longwitz, said the legislation would help create 800 to 1,000 jobs.

There is a pending motion in the House to reconsider the bill.

Longwitz stresses that the private financing plan will not leave taxpayers on the hook.

He is optimistic the measure will again pass the House.

"If they vote yes again it goes straight to the governor, and we've been working with the Mississippi Development Authority all along which is in the governor's administration. So I believe the governor will sign this into law because we're all interested in more jobs in Mississippi," said Sen. Will Longwitz (R) Madison.

The House vote is expected Sunday or Monday.
