Woman tries to save friend's life, now fights to save own

HOLDEN, MO (KCTV) -

One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, but for one woman, she was diagnosed under very unusual circumstances. 

Teresa Moore was trying to save a friend's life, now she's fighting to save her own life.

It was not what anyone expected, especially for someone who checks out healthy enough to donate a part of her liver to a friend needing a transplant. That was until the final test didn't turn out right.

Moore's pink polishes line her nail salon's rose colored walls. Her life is centered around making others feel good. When she heard a friend needed a new liver to survive, she didn't hesitate to help.

"I instantly got ahold of her. I don't even know how to describe the feeling I had in my heart. I knew I had to do it," Moore said.

Using a test kit from the Mayo Clinic, she found out she was a perfect match until one final test.

"My very last test was the mammogram which that was the one test I did not want to do. I did not think it was necessary ... thought it was a waste of time," she said.

The test found a tumor in the 41-year-old's left breast. It was stage-two breast cancer.

"And my first reaction was, 'Does this mean I don't get to donate my liver,'" Moore said.

The U.S. Preventative Service Task Force recommends women have mammogram when they turn 50 - whether they feel a lump or not.

"Before the age of 50, the reasons to be sent to have a mammogram done would be to have a suspicious lump felt or a family history with a close relative with a breast cancer history or a breast lump," said Dr. Chris Maxwell with the Kingsville Medical Clinic.

Moore isn't 50 yet, and she has never felt a lump. She also has no family history. She would have no other way of knowing if not for her friend.

"I went there to help her, but she actually saved me," Moore said.

Moore is involved in a breast cancer research study at Mayo Clinic. She'll undergo 20 weeks of chemotherapy. She hopes the findings of study will lead to a future cure or better treatment for others.
