School bus driver ticketed for crash that injured students

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The school bus driver in Friday afternoon's crash with a dump truck was ticketed for failure to yield, according to Baton Rouge Police.

One student was taken to the hospital and four or five students were treated for injuries after a school bus and a dump truck collided Friday at Greenwell Springs and Greenway Drive.

The bus is from McKinley Middle Magnet School. The crash happened around 3:20 p.m.

The child taken to the hospital was taken for non life threatening injuries. The other four or five student injured were treated at the scene.

The bus driver was also treated at the scene. Initial reports say about 25 students were on the bus when the crash happened.

According to Baton Rouge Police, the dump truck driver was headed westbound on Greenwell Springs Road and the school bus was headed southbound on Greenway Drive. Police say the bus driver tried to turn onto Greenwell Springs Road and that is when the collision happened.

According to the East Baton Rouge Parish Spokesperson Susan Nelson, the district's Risk Management Department Head is on his way to the hospital to check on the student. Police say the student is expected to be okay.

She also said Dr. Herman Brister is on his way to the scene to see for himself what happened and assess whether any further action may need to be taken.

Two people ran from the burning home in the Saucier community overnight. First responders say the duo was inside the burning building long enough to breathe in too much smoke. AMR rushed both people to the hospital so they could be treated for smoke inhalation. By the time fire trucks arrived, flames and smoke could be seen pouring out of the entire home. The trailer was a total loss. Sullivan says the home did not have working smoke alarms.
