Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo is returning to Jones Park in Gulfport

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Gulfport Mayor George Schloegel said the Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo is back where it belongs, where it began 65 years ago. It will be held at Jones Park July 4th through the 7th.

Mayor George Schloegel said, "This is a proud day for us. Now I'm going to get over here with them to tell you that on Thursday July the 4th of this year the Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo comes back home after having started here back in the 1940's and we are very very proud to make this announcement."

Mayor Schloegel recognized those who helped keep the Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo going, after Hurricane Katrina.

"To the Board of Supervisors, to the city of Long Beach, to the city of Biloxi, to the Island View Casino who helped keep the rodeo going until we could get our facility built back up at Jones Park we appreciate that they were very cooperative in making the rodeo safe and as a viable thing for our community, " Schloegel stated.

Michael Casano said Gulfport City officials and members of the Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo came to an agreement last week. Casano says bringing the fishing rodeo to Jones Park and hosting the event under the Barksdale Pavilion is great.

Casano said, "The facilities are fantastic. We're going to have the ability to bring in fish by water by the pavilion. Our stage is in the beautiful area by the water on the side of the pavilion. We're going to have live music and entertainment. We have great space for vendors. The fish display is going to be remarkable as it always is and we also have a great prize display."
