Gulfport firefighter injured, but okay after explosion

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

A Gulfport firefighter was injured in an explosion Tuesday afternoon while responding to fire off Landon Road in Harrison County.

Gulfport Fire Chief Michael Beyerstedt told WLOX News just before 5pm his department was called to assist Harrison County firefighters battling a blaze on Coleman Road. A small explosion occurred as a firefighter entered the building.

"The blast blew him backwards several feet," Beyerstedt said. "He appears to be okay, just shaken up.  He's going to the hospital to be evaluated."

Chief Beyerstedt said he believes the fire was in a shed or garage and is now under control.
