PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Some veterans from all branches of war and military battles boarded an honor flight from Phoenix to Baltimore on Tuesday morning.

The flight not only pays honor to our nation's history, but the history many of these veterans created, such as 94-year-old Archie Kelley who is a survivor of the bombing at Pearl Harbor that took place more than 70 years ago.

"At my age I can't remember someone I met last night, but I can remember every detail about Pearl Harbor," Kelley said.

For him the honor flight is a thrill because he finally gets to see the monument erected in honor of what took place that day in Pearl Harbor.

The honor flights out of Phoenix were started back in 2008 by Susan Howe.  She has military in her blood. Not only did her father serve in WWII, but both of her sons have had tours in Iraq.

When Howe retired she wanted to give back to service men and women, so she came up with these honor flights to share with them a piece of history.

"It has changed my life. It has been an amazing journey," Howe said.

She has accompanied more than 500 veterans on these trips back East, where for three days they tour memorials and pay honor to the history they helped create.

During each flight, spectators salute, clap and offer words of praise for each veteran as they board.  It's an act that each of them notices and appreciates.

"World War II it was really our last big war and I hope the very last one," Kelley said.

Each honor flight can accommodate 30 veterans and even though the trip costs $900 per veteran, they never pay a penny.  The flight is donated to each and every veteran.

There are seven more flights from Phoenix scheduled for this year, with the next one taking place April 9.
