Stove fire displaces residents at apartment in Waveland

WAVELAND, MS (WLOX) -

Several Waveland residents have been displaced from their apartment after a fire Saturday around 6:42 p.m., according to Waveland Fire Chief Mike Smith.

The fire happened at The Ridge apartments located at 548 Highway 90 in Waveland. Despite minimal fire and smoke damage, there was water damage. The water damage came after two sprinkler heads were activated from the fire.

It took about one minute for Waveland firefighters to arrive on the scene. Once they got there the fire was already out thanks to the sprinkler system. Smith said the fire happened in a third floor unit.

"There was a couple of inches of water on the floors due to the two sprinkler heads. There was very little fire damage and very little smoke damage," Smith said.

Smith said the apartment's electrical system had to be shutdown to turn off the sprinklers. That resulted in officials evacuating the entire apartment complex.

Red Cross was on the scene and will continue to work with any families impacted by the fire.

No injuries have been reported and no units were destroyed.

There are 24 units at the apartment complex, no word on how many units have water damage.
