WARREN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Vicksburg police confirm the death of 30-year-old Shanell Burden Stowers has been ruled a homicide.

Stowers' skeletal remains were found Friday in a vacant lot about 800 feet off Martin Luther Kind Boulevard near Mission 66. Workers reported they were excavating the land when they found the remains.

The remains were sent to the Mississippi Crime Lab and dental records confirmed the identity of the remains. No cause of death has been determined.

Stowers was reported missing in Warren County Oct. 5. The Vicksburg mother of four was supposed to pick up one of her children for doctor's appointment the next morning. Her car was found Oct. 5 on the side of Old Jackson Road with the key in the ignition.

Stowers' ex-husband, Jamal Stowers, was in front of his mother's home Tuesday off Alcorn Drive being interviewed by a news crew when Shanell Stowers' relatives approached and accused him of causing her death.

A group of people, including children, gathered when gunfire suddenly erupted. Jamal Stowers' mother's home was in the line of fire. Now police are searching for the gunman.

"Possibly six shots were fired. Two of the shots went inside the residence were more than six people were inside. So obviously the person that was firing the weapon certainly didn't have the interest and safety of other persons inside the home. We very well could have been investigating another homicide," said Vicksburg Police Chief Walter Armstrong.

Armstrong said Jamal Stowers was incarcerated when Shanell went missing in October, and he is not considered a suspect at this time. The 25-year-old was released from prison in December.

Vicksburg police are seeking information from the public regarding the death. If you have any information, contact Lt. Sandra Williams with VPD at 601-636-2511, investigator San Winchester with the Warren County Sheriff's Office at 601-636-1761 or Central Mississippi Crime Stoppers at 601-355-TIPS.

14 years as part of the Ole Miss football program as a coach or player has prepared Matt Luke for this opportunity. Admittedly it doesn't come under the circumstances he might've envisioned. The Pascagoula Panthers open the 2017 football season on the road. In fact, their first three games are road contests. That scheduling quirk may give field turf crews just enough time to get War Memorial Stadium ready for the September 8 home opener. The wet weather in South Mississippi is placing quite the burden on construction workers as they attempt to complete stadium renovations. The project was suppose to be finished before the beginning of Pascagoula's football season.
