Irish step dancers prepare for St. Patrick's Day festivities

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (CBS5) -

St. Patrick's Day is this weekend and it's time to celebrate.

Tomorrow the Irish Faire is at 10 a.m. at 1106 N. Central Ave. At the same time the annual Phoenix St. Patrick's Day Parade will begin.

CBS 5 caught up with some Irish step dancers who will be performing on Saturday.

The dancers practice three times a week for 2 1/2 hours. They compete at a national and international level.

Courtney Brooks has been dancing for 13 years. She says it's hard work because the dances are long and the dresses are difficult to move in.

"They're heavy with all the rhinestones and everything. They're probably a couple pounds lighter with out them," Brooks said.

"There are different dress makers in America and Ireland ... all over the country. No solo dress is the same," she added.

They will be in the parade, along with bagpipers, dignitaries and a green horse.

And grab some cans of food because the Friends of Saint Patrick, Arizona Chapter, is sponsoring a food drive for St. Vincent de Paul. Collections can be made along the parade route.

The new McClelland Irish Library will also be open, featuring the "Fighting Irishmen" boxing exhibit.

Visitors can stop by and learn more about the history of Irish boxers in America through May.
